Anyone interested in joining and making an Aberdeen clone that will be an improvement upon the original game?

No, not cloning BF1942. Making a small game based on the Aberdeen map using the resources already available from the commercial game. There wouldn't be any content creation besides some updated sounds and skyboy. Just what you see in Aberdeen right now would be used.
The attempt to re-create a lot of Aberdeen with the added ability to highly improve upon aspects of it in terms of networking, lighting, gameplay, that can't be accomplished with a mod.
In the end, a tank game with maps more realistic than Aberdeen could be created by doing some content creation.

Adam, that sounds great! I would like to see it when you are done.
Please make sure you make your own version based on the original game. EA and their vendors more then likely hold a patent / copyright on the original maps and renderings and you might get in trouble if the game is very simular to the original plus or minus a few tweaks or changes.
It sounds great Adam. I wish you much luck. Its my understansing that you don't come on ea10 or ts much anymore but I hope to see you someday.

Well, the idea was to use all of the data from BF1942 game and just require users of the clone to have a license of BF1942 to obtain the data from.
It would be programmed in C++ and be structured to allow for portability. At the moment I am using DX9, but if the renderer is designed well enough a GL could be made without changing existing code. The problem with portability will be the content because not all platforms align data in the same way, but a conversion routine could be made and would take longer on some platforms.
At this point I just want to have an m10 or sherman drive around the map and blow stuff up. I've done nothing with models yet, just terrain and texturing it, so you can only fly around the map, not drive in a tank or anything.
And guys, for any sort of project like this it has to begin somewhere in someones mind and then hopefully is matures enough to have others contribute. At this point it's all me, but when I have a substantive version working I hope to be joined by others. I'm both optimistic and realistic.

So at this point I can fly around the Aberdeen map. It just doesn't have models yet, so no trees, rocks, tanks, or buildings. I'll load those when I understand more about them.
Each step gets closer to the goal! :)

The next steps are
1) Better design of the terrain renderer
2) Collision detection (so I can walk around on the ground and jump, etc.)
3) Model loading of static structures
4) Model loading of dynamic objects like players and tanks
5) Learn networking and hope that it's easy to do with the previous code
6) Post the program on the web so we can play Aberdeen without shitty hit detection and bugs! OWNED! :)
The only problem is that you'll have to play with friends since there won't be any cheat detection. AND, my aimbot will work perfectly! muhahhaa.

I've been continuing work on the clone. The renderer makes Aberdeen look stunning!!! And I've not added any models in yet.
At this point I can walk or fly around the map. The high res textures are in effect and fog is also working (although I've yet to find the exact same colour as BF1942).

To do:
Optimize the renderer, tweak it a bit.
Draw the skybox to get rid of the black background.
Create an in-game console.
Collision detection.
And, then TANKS! :)
I'm also figuring out if the textures will still look nice if I allow for craters to be made in the landscape. That is, I want to have tank shells blast holes in the ground! lol.

It'll be some time before the program has networking, I think. It's just little 'ol be doing all the thinking and coding, lol. I am only human! :)
